Artist Statement
The fragment has been a constant feature of my work as a ceramic artist. A fragment gives you a different narrative than a whole piece of work. The whole piece tells its own singular story whereas the fragment speaks of time, of use and of waste, a journey. I am influenced by ceramic traditions, including those revealed in sherds obtained from local archaeological investigations. My work is a collage of associations between different events, times and places. It invites the viewer to imagine the several processes at work, so taking part in a dynamic recreation of what has gone before. The form this piece takes is based on a traditional Tudor baluster jug fractured into separate fragments, a deliberate gesture of making, unmaking and remaking.
