First Large Sculptures 1992-2000
In 1992 we (me and my second husband, musician Tony Roberts) decided to moved further west and found an old cottage in 2 acres on a south facing hill with a large workshop. I had learned to weld for the public commissions I’d undertaken, though this work had, by then, dried up (although I missed the income they brought in, I was pleased to stop as I think there are enough statues to questionable public figures already).
In any case, I was equipped to work bigger and I challenged myself to make something huge at the turn of the millennium. I made a 15 foot red stiletto shoe. This was a celebration of women throughout the twentieth century whose strength had helped them overcome so many obstacles and get onto a more equal footing with men (though this is still not a given).
