Robert Marshall is a conceptual environmental artist. MA in fine art at Royal College of art 2018 – Essay: Distinction, is sculpture becoming ‘noisier’ in the information age? He is one of the most prolific artists from the southwest and continues to redefine topics of social and economic importance at the moment. It is the Artist’s belief, that there is a need now to not just look outwards when trying to protect the environment but also within. It is part of a series of works called ‘Portals’ that uses former front doors of houses as a symbolic entry into provoking thoughtfully considered re-evaluation by the viewer. This work is made using a reclaimed door which has been cut and turned inside out and outside in, again emphasising the need to reevaluate everyday life.

Outside in & inside out

‘Outside In & Inside Out’ is my proposed work for Broomhill. It is part of a series of works called ‘Portals’ that uses former front doors of houses as a symbolic entry into provoking thoughtfully considered re-evaluation by the viewer. These sculptures are both monumental and memorial. They are fixed like tombstones to a solid hidden base and yet they also seem to float above the ground. From certain angles, the door seems closed and yet from other positions they can seem to be open and inviting. It is this ‘fluidity’ within the work that the artist hopes will strike up important conversations with the viewer on how we tackle environmental issues in an intelligent way.

Artist statement

Why Doors?
Doors or doorways symbolize the transition and passageway from one place to another in religion, mythology, and literature. They are seen as concepts of freedom, liberation and escapism. Doors in dreams relate to a period of transition or change, a new stage, both positive and fearful.

Each door that is used in the artist’s work has been carefully chosen. All are used and reclaimed. All have been painted with used household paints from local dumps. All doors used are more than symbolic. The doors have history, they have had a life. They are soaked in memories and emotions. They invite and protect. They are portals that allow the outside in and the inside out. They allow you to re-evaluate the past, reassess the now and hopefully provide access to better futures.
